Gun Control Legislation: House Passes Sweeping Bill : NPR

From the article:

The legislation mandates background checks be performed on all gun sales, including firearm purchases made privately. The Senate is unlikely to take it up.

Okay, don’t get your hopes up because the Senate will probably squash this, but this is good. This is a step in the right direction.

At least they caught him before he started shooting.

The Tallahassee Yoga Shooter Was Motivated By Hatred Toward Women, Police Say

From the article:

The man who killed two women at a Tallahassee, Florida, yoga studio last year had a lifelong history of sexual misconduct, and his attack was motivated by his hatred of women, police said.

Tallahassee Police Chief Michael DeLeo on Tuesday provided the results of the investigation into 40-year-old Scott Beierle, who killed himself on Nov. 2 after opening fire at Hot Yoga Tallahassee. DeLeo said the shooting wasn’t meant to target any particular person, but rather it was caused by Beierle’s “lifetime of misogynistic attitudes.”

“He expressed hatred toward women in general,” DeLeo said.

These men never show up fully formed out of the blue. They exist, and there is a pattern.

In this case, Beierle had a long history of arrests since 2012, and the FBI was called in August 2018. They even have him on record casing the Yoga studio.

I just wanted to boost the signal.

Texas indicts Cody Wilson on multiple counts of sexual assault of a minor | Ars Technica

From the article:

More than three months have passed since a warrant (PDF) initially went out for Defense Distributed founder Cody Wilson’s arrest. That document detailed Wilson’s alleged sexual assault against a female “child younger than 17 years of age” whom he reportedly solicited through the website SugarDaddyMeet.com. Last Friday, December 28, the State of Texas finally formally indicted (PDF) Wilson. The 3D printed gun advocate now faces multiple charges: four counts of sexual assault of a child, two charges of indecency with a child by contact, and two charges of indecency with a child by exposure.

These charges are all second-degree felonies punishable by up to 20 years in prison and fines of up to $10,000.

This guy is one of those weird libertarian douchebags that wanted to distribute 3D printed plans to guns. This caused an entire “OH MY GOD!” scare that almost crippled the 3D printing community as everyone freaked out and discussed putting blocks on the 3D printed.

The thing is, while you could 3D print a gun, the industry wasn’t even that far along at the time, and it just wasn’t that feasible. You’d be more likely to hurt yourself than come up with a usable gun.

Then, this guy went out ands slept with a girl that was under 17, and it was kinky as hell. He fled to Taiwan, before coming back and turning himself in. If I recall, he feels this was an entrapment sting because of his obsession with 3D printed gun parts. It had nothing to do with meeting her through sugardaddymeet.com.

My favorite part of his bullshit in this article was this:

Beyond that evidence, Travis County Magistrate Judge Tamara Needles signed off on a few additional search warrants. One from September 26 (PDF) asked for permission to seize photo evidence of Wilson’s groin and upper leg area, since the alleged victim initially told authorities she and Wilson exchanged nude photos and the affidavit states Wilson has a “uniquely identifiable skin condition.”

He’s fired one defense team and replaced them, and his defense is that he thought she was 18. Seriously? Even 18 year olds look dangerously childlike to me. I’d also submit if you are meeting on sugardaddymeet.com? You aren’t an innocent. Sorry, not sorry. Douchebag.

He’s got enough funds to be out on a $150,000 bail despite initially fleeing to Taiwan. What the fuck?

Gun deaths in America reach highest level in nearly 40 years, CDC data shows – CNN

From the article:

Nearly 40,000 people died by guns last year, marking the highest number of gun deaths in 38 years, according to a new analysis of data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s WONDER database.

This chart shows the sheer level of suicide guns are implicated in.

I don’t know the answer, but I do know that Adam Ruins Everything did a great episode on guns that skewered both sides fo the debate equally, and then tossed in a truth bomb about how race plays into the debate.

I highly recommend finding that complete episode of Adam Ruin’s Everything because it was well worth watching.

How Credit Cards Are Used to Finance Mass Shootings – The New York Times

Okay, let me get this straight. If I even sneeze wrong while making a $250 credit card purchase, they will freeze my card and make me call them to figure out if it’s really me, but a guy can wrack up $11,000 in gun related purchases and they don’t care? One guy racked up $26,000 in purchases over three credit cards.

When I was in school, paying my stuff on card for the points when I got my quarterly loans, I’d have to call them every damn quarter to get the transactions to go through.

I waffle on this because I’m not big on credit purchase surveillance, but they do it anyways, and this set of purchases someone isn’t a part of the credit companies lock down of your card?

They routinely refuse to pay certain businesses, like pot related shops. You can’t use your credit card for a lap dance service or donations to Wikileaks. Some won’t even let you buy online porn.

The credit card industry is already in the business of moralizing our purchases and deciding what we can buy with the credit. Yet, apparently thousands and thousands of dollars in sudden gun purchases is A-OK.

Parkland Shooter Harassed, Obsessively Texted Girl

From the article:

On Friday, the Broward Sherrif’s Office (BSO) released a report detailing information about the man behind the deadly shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. While the most salacious detail—that the Parkland shooter, a fan of Donald Trump, put a “Make American Great Again” hat in the casket of his liberal mother—is making the rounds, there’s another telling detail that’s getting far less attention than it deserves.

Source: Parkland Shooter Harassed, Obsessively Texted Girl

The shooter fit the dangerous white guy profile of harassing a girl who did not return his affections in that dangerous stalker way only angry entitled white boys do.

This should not be shocking, as women face extraordinary risks for violence when they rebuff men. This guy is just another idiot Elliot Rodgers.
