Denver transgender woman left partially paralyzed after horrific late night attack / LGBTQ Nation

Denver resident, Amber Nicole, a transgender woman, was attacked and severely beaten outside of a bar. Her jaw was broken and her face was left partially paralyzed.

Nicole was leaving the bar and getting into a car with a friend when she was attacked around 1:20am.

“We’re just out trying to live our lives and have fun with our peers, be with our friends, just live our lives and people just can’t seem to see us that way,” Nicole told the local CBS station.

Cell phone video shows the woman ready to get into the car with her friend before she turns away and goes out of camera range. She is helped back to the car by another friend shortly after, bloody and battered.

She was just trying to go home, when she was permanently maimed by her attackers.

A GoFundMe account has been set up to help with her medical costs.

Trump touts new faith-based protections for health care workers for the right to refuse to treat patients.

From the article:

Health-care providers and civil rights groups, however, expressed worry the rule could compromise patients’ well-being in ways large and small. On page 80, for instance, HHS appears to allow for the possibility that ambulance drivers, or EMT personnel, could refuse care in certain situations.

“It appears that a paramedic could refuse to drive a woman having an emergency – such as an ectopic pregnancy – because they object to the treatment she will receive at the hospital,” Heather Shumaker, senior counsel at the National Women’s Law Center.

Others feared the rule would be used as cover for discrimination.

“The administration’s decision puts LGBTQ people at greater risk of being denied necessary and appropriate health care solely based on their sexual orientation or gender identity,” said David Stacy, government affairs director for Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest LGBTQ advocacy group.

This is going to disproportionately impact the LGTBQ community, and anybody seeking reproductive healthcare.

This is nothing more than a license to discriminate.

From my own experiences as a transgender man, giving bigots the right to refuse me when they were more than willing to do so in a healthcare setting before this is horrific. Now, they will have no repercussions when using what power they have to hurt others.

My only hope is that the next administration will right all of these very egregious wrongs.

You’ll have a harder time getting a mortgage if you’re a same-sex couple / LGBTQ Nation

From the article:

If you’ve found getting a mortgage to be a near-impossible task, there may be a reason: discrimination.

Researchers from Iowa State University’s Ivy College of Business have laid bare a painful but unsurprising truth: when they revealed that same-sex couples are 73% more likely to be denied a mortgage compared to their straight counterparts.

Even if you manage to secure a mortgage, you’ll likely find yourself paying more in fees. It may seem like a small amount — same-sex couples pay 0.2 percentage points more than straight couples — but that totals $8.6 million to $86 million nationwide in additional interest and fees. That’s even more shocking, given the study found no evidence that same-sex couples show a higher risk of default.

This is institutionally enshrined bigotry.

Transgender man receives $93,000 healthcare bill after suicide attempt · PinkNews

From the article:

Transgender man Oliver Jordan received an enormous bill of $93,000 after he spent eight nights in a medical facility as a result of a suicide attempt.

Source: Transgender man receives $93,000 healthcare bill after suicide attempt · PinkNews

They charged him for $10,000 for a room for 8 nights. I’ve seen less, and I’ve seen more. Meds for those 8 days calm to $6,000.

He’s transgender, and can’t have top surgery due to costs. He has a GoFundMe. He’s been fundraising for 15 months, and has only reached $1,665 of his $6,000 goal.

The reality is that his mental health would probably drastically improve if he could get that top surgery.

Note: I kicked in $20. I wish I could do more, but at the time of this publishing I am literally going to be in Arizona with my wife for her facial feminization surgery, and we are literally doing that instead of retirement so she can life a normal life. I don’t want my wife to ever feel hopeless.

These costs are really a drop in the bucket, medically. It should all be covered.

Megan Fox Isn’t an Ally, She’s Bisexual | The Mary Sue

From the article:

Megan Fox took to social media to speak up against the anti-LGBTQ bills in Tennessee, which is as good a time as any to remind everyone that she is bisexual and not a straight ally.

Source: Megan Fox Isn’t an Ally, She’s Bisexual | The Mary Sue

I was interested in this story, because this happens. When you are bisexual, the L&G community will often have individuals that will take your queerness away from you. For them, you don’t count.

I keep seeing studies coming out that state bisexuals suffer more sexual abuse, more violence, more economic depression, than the lesbian and gay people.

Bisexuals are attacked for not saying anything and passing as straight, and then attacked when they stand up and say they are bisexual.

Women are called Friday Night Lesbians, and told they are just doing it for male attention. Men are told they are gay, and just not jumping across the line.

Yet, study after study show bisexuals outnumber their gay and lesbian counterparts.

The Williams Institute did a study on this:

  • An estimated 3.5% of adults in the United States identify as lesbian, gay, or bisexual and an estimated 0.3% of adults are transgender.
  • This implies that there are approximately 9 million LGBT Americans, a figure roughly equivalent to the population of New Jersey.
  • Among adults who identify as LGB, bisexuals comprise a slight majority (1.8% compared to 1.7% who identify as lesbian or gay).
  • Women are substantially more likely than men to identify as bisexual. Bisexuals comprise more than half of the lesbian and bisexual population among women in eight of the nine surveys considered in the brief. Conversely, gay men comprise substantially more than half of gay and bisexual men in seven of the nine surveys.

I guess I am just tired of the queer community constantly fighting the inclusion of bisexuals. (Note: I am including pansexual’s in this, but focusing on this terminology because of the article and is more recognization for the majority of folks who are still in queer theory 101 land.)

Mississippi man brutally beaten because attackers ‘thought he was gay’ · PinkNews

From the article:

A Mississippi man’s jaw was broken in two places during a brutal beating because his attackers thought he was gay, according to his family.

Trevor Gray’s jaw was wired shut after the horrifying attack in Waynesboro, Mississippi, on April 12.

Landon McCaa and Toman Sion Brown were arrested and face not only assault, but possibly federal hate crime.

The reason these things happen is that bigots don’t care about accuracy of their bigotry. They just want to hurt people, and are picking targets with thin justifications, and engage in what they perceive as socially acceptable attacks.

A Christian adoption agency is suing for the right to refuse LGBTQ parents / LGBTQ Nation

From the article:

A Christian adoption agency in Michigan is suing for the right to discriminate against LGBTQ parents.

St. Vincent Catholic Charities filed a federal lawsuit in Michigan alleging that a recent settlement between Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel and two lesbian couples violates their rights.

In 2015, the state of Michigan passed a law that allowed child-placement agencies to refuse to provide any services that conflicted with their “sincerely held religious beliefs.”

In 2017, two lesbian couples sued the state after they were allegedly turned away by an adoption agency for being gay. When Nessel, a Democrat, was elected, she started the process of settling the suit, and last month the settlement was announced.

The settlement says that the state will not allow adoption agencies that have contracts with the state to discriminate against same-sex couples.

They are throwing a fit because they aren’t allowed to discriminate.

If I hear “conflicts with my sincerely held religious beliefs” one more time. . .

At this point that is just code for I’m a bigot and I’m trying to hide it behind Jesus.

Soon you won’t be able to justify killing a gay man in Nevada by saying he hit on you / LGBTQ Nation

From the article:

Nevada lawmakers have moved to ban so-called gay and trans panic defenses from being used to revictimize LGBTQ people who have been assaulted and/or murdered.

Senate Bill 97 prohibits use in a criminal case of certain defenses based on the sexual orientation or gender identity or expression of the victim.

The bill, introduced in January, passed the Nevada State Senate on the 16th on a vote of 19-2, with Republicans Ira Hansen and Pete Goicoechea voting against the bill.

A gay or trans panic defense is one in which the perpetrator of a crime states that they had a moment of impaired judgement after they faced an unwanted sexual advancement from someone of their same gender, or after discovering that someone they may have been sexually attracted to is transgender.

This will be only the 4th state to ban this bullshit defense.

A transgender student just lost his ROTC scholarship because of the military ban / LGBTQ Nation

From the article:

Lieutenant colonel Matthew O’Neill, the ROTC chair at the University of Texas, tried to save Pesqueira’s scholarship, the student said. O’Neill argued that that Pesquiera should be exempt from the policy because his scholarship was awarded before the transgender military ban went into effect.

That didn’t work.

The kid has a GoFundMe which as of writing this has fulfilled its $20,000 goal.

This kid will get a happy ending because of the media involvement, but there are undoubtedly others that are not.

This ban is effecting lives.
