U.S. Denying Citizenship to Kids of Same-Sex Couples Born Elsewhere | The Mary Sue

From the article:

Last summer, without fanfare, the State Department changed the rules of the Immigration and Nationality Act so that a child born outside the country to American parents has to be biologically related to one of the parents to receive birthright U.S. citizenship. The State Department website itself reads: “Even if local law recognizes a surrogacy agreement and finds that U.S. parents are the legal parents of a child conceived and born abroad through ART, if the child does not have a biological connection to a U.S. citizen parent, the child will not be a U.S. citizen at birth.”

Worse, even if there is a biological connection, same-sex couples are still being denied U.S. citizenship for their children born out of the country because the State Department has decided their children were born “out of wedlock,” which means they have to go through even more legal and logistical problems to ensure citizenship for their children. The Daily Beast, who broke this story, writes that when the INA was first conceived, there was no reference to biological connection to the children. It was only last year that suddenly the idea of “out of wedlock” children became centered on same-sex parents, even if they are married.

The news on what is happening to LGBTQ people in the US is just exhausting in how horrible it is.

41% of trans people in US south face police violence, report says · PinkNews

From the article:

Almost half of transgender, gender non-binary and gender non-conforming people in America’s southern states experience “high levels of violence by law enforcement,” a report has found.

This number jumps to 52 percent when looking only at respondents of colour.

The Grapevine: A Southern Trans Report was carried out by the Transgender Law Center at Southerners on New Ground (TLC@SONG), a collaboration between two LGBT+ advocacy groups based in Atlanta, Georgia.

There are large parts of my own country I feel like I can’t go to. The South, for transgender people, and LGB in general, is not safe. Not when 41% of all transgender people face police violence, and 52% for transgender people of color.

The horror stories I have seen play out over the years is enough that I will never ever go there. I have to protect myself and my wife. The chances of a bad outcome for us if we go to the South for any reason, is just too high.

Friends of Mississippi Waffle House shooting victim say the incident was a hate crime

From the article:

Friends of the 22-year-old victim say she walked into the Southaven Waffle House and was verbally abused by a stranger, simply because she’s a transgender woman.

Southaven Police confirm an argument followed and that when the victim tried to walk away, the suspect shot her.

“She was shot in her leg, both of her legs. And the bullets went through her leg and broke her femur,” said the victim’s friend. “She’s gonna be okay. She’s got to have surgery. She’s gonna get a rod and a plate put in her leg.”

I’m not holding my breath for a hate crime designation because Mississippi is a hellhole for LGBTQ rights, and their hate crime statute does not cover sexuality or gender identity.

Watch this woman suddenly demean & spit on a gay man as he tries to ride the subway / LGBTQ Nation

From the article:

A bystander on the Jubilee line of the London Underground caught a homophobic attack on film as one rider used anti-gay slurs and spit on another passenger.

The video of the apparently intoxicated woman, originally reported by the Daily Mail, was provided by an unnamed onlooker who said that the attack was unprovoked..

The short clip shows the woman shouting at a passenger while several other riders look on.

At the beginning of the clip, she tells the man, “because you’re gay I’m gonna be like, ‘nah, he’s gay, just let him go?’ No! Because you’re gay, even more, I’m going to violate you.”

I am not shocked that a violent asshole attacked an obviously gay man on the subway. That is the reality that LGBTQ face. If we leave our homes, and just exist in public, there are people like this woman that feel entitled to violence against us.

I fear this for my wife every time she leaves the house without me.

However, times are changing, as the another passengers in the car tried to stop her.

Trump administration is trying to strip a child of American citizenship because he has two dads / LGBTQ Nation

From the article:

In 2016, Andrew and Elad Dvash-Banks had two children via a surrogate and an anonymous egg donor in Toronto. Elad is Israeli, and Andrew has both American and Canadian citizenship. Andrew’s sperm was used to create Aidan, and Elad’s for Ethan, and both men are named on both of the boys’ birth certificates.

A year later they tried to move to the US, but they ran into complications while applying for American passports. Even though Aidan is Ethan’s father, the State Department said that he couldn’t be considered a U.S. citizen because his biological father isn’t American.

Of course, straight parents don’t have to prove that a father is biologically related to a child in order to get citizenship if they are legally recognized as the father. In fact, this is already settled law.

ICE and immigration departments in the US are devolving into a kind of petty evil I never thought I’d see in this lifetime.

I am really ashamed of my countries behavior.

New Report Details Failure of Nation’s Police Departments to Protect and Serve Transgender People | National Center for Transgender Equality

From the report:

Of the 25 largest police departments, the report found:

  • No department explicitly requires regular training on transgender interaction policies for all members across rank.

  • No department required for officers to respectfully record the name currently being used by the individual that is separate from the spaces used for legal names or aliases in Department forms.

  • No Department explicitly provides for transgender individuals to be transported along with individuals of the same gender identity.

  • Only two departments explicitly prohibited sexual conduct between officers and those in their custody

  • Out of the sixteen departments with holding facilities, only four adequately address access to hormone medications.

  • Out of the sixteen departments with holding facilities, 10 failed to provide specific guidance on housing placement for transgender individuals.

  • A majority of departments (16 of 25) fail to provide search procedures for transgender individuals and/or require members to perform searches based on sex as assigned at birth or genitalia.

  • Only nine of the 25 departments include gender identity and/or expression language in their non-discrimination policy, which is the best way to clarify that transgender people are protected.

This is not shocking. Dealing with the justice system when you are transgender is a never ending nightmare. I hope this report helps things to get better.

Suspected Colorado gunman joked about school shootings, friend says – CNN

From the article:

One of the suspects in the deadly Colorado school shooting is a bully who joked about shootings and threatened other students for years, a former friend said.

Source: Suspected Colorado gunman joked about school shootings, friend says – CNN

It’s not really shocking that the main instigator in the shooting was a young man that traded in violent threats and bullying. If you look back to the Columbine shooting, it’s much the same, despite the mythology of it all.

In fact, if you want a really good break down, Ask a Mortician does one of the best I’ve seen. She breaks it down in under under 14 minutes, how the mythology is so incredibly off base to what really happened.

Having another school shooting isn’t shocking in this country because there will always be violent young men, and we give them far too much access to guns. It’s that simple. Guns expedite the process of murder.

The shooting takes an unusual twist in that the second boy in the shooting was transgender.

In all the usual news sources, this has become something of a sensationalistic point. Conservative hate-sites are just boiling over with this tidbit of news. In reality, transgender men have similar crime patterns as cis men.

As a transgender man, it’s sad to see someone going through what I have choose to become a fucking murderer. I know it’s going to end up used as a sensationalistic talking point by those that want to attack transgender people. It’s even possible that this might poke a hole in the invisible curtain that hides transgender men from view, culturally. It’s not exactly the kind of representation I was hoping for.

In all, I don’t have a lot of empathy towards anyone that engages in violence, even someone from my own community.

I am so tired of these events happening, and out lawmakers putting up their hands to give “thoughts and prayers” and not actually fixing the issue.
